Overview

Julie J. Kim advises clients on a wide range of pre- and post-market regulatory matters related to medical devices and drug development. She provides guidance on clinical protocol review and state and federal transparency reporting requirements.

Before joining Hyman, Phelps & McNamara, Julie practiced at an intellectual property law firm, where she prosecuted and counseled clients on patent portfolios in the medical device and biotechnology sectors.

During law school, Julie served as a student attorney at the Vaccine Injury Litigation Clinic, where she prepared and conducted a two-day trial, assisted in post-hearing briefing, and delivered oral arguments. Her commitment to pro bono service earned her the Community Legal Clinics Volunteer Service Award.

Before her legal career, Julie worked as a nurse practitioner specializing in neurosurgery and infectious diseases. She earned a Doctor of Nursing Practice from New York University and a Master of Science in Nursing from Emory University. At Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, she provided specialized care for patients with spinal and brain diseases, managing surgical and non-surgical pain and addressing surgical site infections.

Julie also spearheaded a research initiative to reduce infection rates associated with external ventricular drain insertions and hospital-acquired infections. Her experience in the Neuro Intensive Care Unit exposed her to complex brain trauma cases and bioethics, shaping her perspective on the intersection of law, medicine, and technology. Through these experiences, she gained firsthand insight into how technological advancements can enhance patient care and improve healthcare outcomes.

Julie is a member of the DC Asian Pacific American Bar Association, the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, and Sigma Theta Tau, an international honor society for nurses that promotes scholarship, leadership, and service.
